New Possibilities for Instagram, a Windows Phone Perhaps?

Instagram Logo (Stylized)

Still hot on the news of Instagram for Android’s release now comes Facebook sealing the deal with Instagram.

For anyone else, who hasn’t heard about Instagram, it is both an application and a social network that enables mobile users to easily apply filters and post photos. In a branding perspective it has a hipterish-retro look and feel.

The popular photo-sharing site, Instagram, was offered to be bought by Facebook for $1billion. Maybe this is how a very talented person like Mark Zuckerberg would have to react after spotting a real talent from the team that developed Instagram, and asked them to join him on Facebook. The two parties made it a point that they wouldn’t just incorporate everything on the social network, rather keep and further develop Instagram’s advantages, now even more with Facebook’s strong engineering team and resources.

The application would still keep the same people you followed and those who followed you before the transition and you’d still be able to share to other social networks. The switch would really be an advantage to Facebook when it comes to the photo social scene.

So much of a sweet talk, I think the tie up would have the users sign in with their Facebook account instead of what used to be their Instagram’s. The application is only available to iPhone and recently to Android, Facebook making a huge investment on it makes me wonder on how they’re planning to make a huge profit on this deal as well. I think Windows phone will be next on their list.

I’ll stick out for the next few months and if I see people ditching Instagram, it would indicate that Facebook failed them. I doubt it. Still I wish many a happy returns to Instagram’s developers, Devin Systrom and Mike Krieger for making their way to today’s highly competitive tech niche.

Instagram For Android Not Working In Samsung Galaxy Y Young GT- S5360

Instagram Logo 2

I’ve just installed the newly released Instagram for Android App today on my Samsung Galaxy Y Young GT- S5360 that occupied 16.59MB of space in the limited internal memory. The popular photo application for iPhone  and other Apple products like iPad, iPod is now ported to the Android OS. This will give a new user base to Instagram. Sorry to spoil the excitement of Samsung Galaxy Y users, the Instagram application is currently not working properly.

The experience will progress from downloading the app properly from Google Play. You may find it unusual with its large file space for a photo app, installing would be going smoothly, signing up would be easy as 123, following other users/friends from other social networks like Facebook and twitter adds to the excitement of sharing the photos in a while after all of those steps… Ended with the disappointment  to start in adding effects/filters  and the uploading of the photos to the social networks with just a black or blank photo. At least border can be be seen around it, but it doesn’t compensate the failure, I guess.

This is just the the first release of Instagram for Android and I’m hoping there will be a fix to it on the next update. Though I’m aware that Instagram use OpenGL 2.2 and Galaxy Y has OpenGL 1.1. As for me and everyone else, waiting will be the best thing to do.

Samsung Galaxy Note Studio in Nuvali Sta.Rosa Laguna

Samsung Galaxy Note Studio

Samsung Mobile Philippines had a roadshow of Samsung Galaxy Note Studio last March 3-4, 2012 in Nuvali Sta.Rosa Laguna.  I got an email about the event last week since It’s near my area I’ve drop by and surprisingly it was fun. The Samsung Galaxy Note Studio was set up in an open area where anyone can experience first hand the mobile phone and  tablet in one. The device is connected to internet using WiFi, browsing to some webpages and  social media apps. They even let me installed Mozilla Firefox mobile  from the Android Market that has 14MB size, it can probably handle most apps with large file sizes with it’s 16GB internal memory and expandable external memory up to 32GB in microSD card. Games are very responsive like the fruit ninja slashing in the big screen size, wait I’m not gonna review this phone right now.

Samsung Galaxy Note Studio

A lot of people are trying out the Samsung Galaxy Note which comes in two colors, black and white version. The white looks like the Apple iPhone and I noticed it has the same normal price range at P33, 000  for the 16BG version. Wait and scout for their next tour as they offer discounts, you can have it for only P29,000 brand new of course. A feedback form is given out that also serves as a raffle coupon for a chance to win some cool prizes. So I’m hoping to win a black Samsung Galaxy Note just like anyone else.

Samsung Galaxy Note Studio

The highlight of this event is the S Pen feature that will make illustrator or graphic artist  sketch, draw and paint using the stylus pen. It can output to a monitor in full resolution using HDMI cable, though having it in portrait mode do not display in full-screen.

Samsung Galaxy Note Studio

Here is my illustration/caricature I got after the long wait in line, though it’s not in color like this. the artist will be mad at me if I requested that.

If you’re in the United States catch the Galaxy Note Studio Mall Tour that open on weekends until March 25, 2012 and Experience the Galaxy Note™ first-hand at select malls near you. Look for our Galaxy Note Studios, where you can try out the device, get a free caricature drawn, and enter to win a Galaxy Note Accessory Pack.

Skype 2.6 Comes To Android, Adds File Sharing

Skype on Android

Skype has been the favorite instant messenger for millions of desktop users for years and it is now catching up fast to become the preferred choice of Android users. Ever since Microsoft purchased Skype, they have released numerous updates to address issues in the existing application as well as to add new features to enhance user experience. The latest offering in this series of updates is Skype 2.6 for Android. It is packed with fresh and intuitive features and is definitely good news for Android users.

The file sending feature is considered a must for an instant messenger. Many Skype for Android users have complained in the past about the absence of the file sharing feature, which the PC version of Skype has offered for years. The Skype 2.6 update, although being termed as a minor update, adds this long desired feature. Users now have the ability to send files, be it videos, photos or documents to family and friends, all for free. File sharing can be done via your device’s Wi-Fi connection or through your device’s data connection. This feature should now cover all the file sending needs of the users, for which they would have used numerous applications in the past. Also, there would not be any need to send files individually through SMS or an email. It also supports video calling service for different android devices.

Apart from the major feature of file sharing being offered to the users, Skype 2.6 for Android has many other new things to offer. The code for the application has been enhanced to provide a perked up video quality for tablets as well as for phones which are equipped with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor such as high-end smartphones or Android Honeycomb tablets. This is definitely good news for many users including the ones who own the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. Skype 2.6 also adds official support for the Motorola Droid Razr and the HTC Amaze 4G. Skype is also working up hard to bring support for video calling to almost all the phones running Android 2.2+. Skype 2.6 has also been enhanced to provide an improved battery usage. Other minor improvements include bug fixes, fix for the white screen on some devices when Skype is launched from the recent applications list, voice mail improvements, new graphics, a fix for video orientation on Galaxy Nexus, capability for auto-sign in and fixes for startup issues on Android 2.1.

As far as the availability of Skype 2.6 is concerned, it is available as a free download in the Android market. The package size is reported to be around 12 megabytes. It is recommended that the users should update their previous versions to this latest one.
Skype has always been a frontrunner as an instant messenger and with this new and improved latest update, the number of downloads are only expected to go higher. Skype 2.6 will definitely contribute to a richer and smoother user experience.

Samsung Galaxy Y Young GT- S5360 Hands on Review

Samsung Galaxy Y

I haven’t done any product reviews but there are a lot of inquiries about this promising mobile phone so here’s the hands on review of the Samsung Galaxy Y Young GT- S5360 or Galaxy Young. Just weeks after the release in the Philippines last October 15, I ditched my old Samsung Punch and got this Android smart phone. I will list it in order base on my preferences.

Design
This is a matter of preference on the form factor, the candy bar like design can suit both gender. Unlike some designs that are too rounded, I find it more suited for the ladies. The silver black casing adds elegance and the textures hides the quality of plastic material. It also protects the back from scratches.

Display and Performance
The small screen size of 3.0” 256K capacitive TFT Display at 240 x 320 pixels, the quality is just like an upgrade to my Samsung Punch while other galaxy models like Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Mini has brighter, clear and crispier graphic displays. The 832 MHz processor is good enough to power this phone, sliding apps with ease though sometimes takes time to load if lot of applications are open.

Applications
The Android Marketplace has 300,000 apps to choose from both with free and paid apps. The fastest and easiest way to download applications is by using the handset connected to the internet though Wi-Fi. In case you’re charging the phone you can download using a desktop computer or laptop and the applications will be downloaded later. A Gmail account is needed to access the Android market.

Battery
One thing I don’t like smartphones is the battery life, this is an exception if you use a lot of applications and still running in the background. It only last for me for a day, with some internet browsing and games. I’m a Sun Cellular user so I make a lot of long phone calls. Installing an application named Juice Defender will somehow help increase the battery life. Kill unwanted running applications in the background with its built in task manager.

Audio
I found the audio a bit unpowered unlike other phones that has a crisp sound even during loud speaker mode. Listening to music using earphones is the next best thing with its 5.1 surround sound support. Glad that it has a 3.5mm audio jack and not the USB type.

Camera
Equipped with 2 megapixels and 15fps video recording, it has a decent quality photos and videos good for posting in social networks but not for print. Low light performance did not meet any of my expectations. Some samples are taken during sunny days except the candles and the Chowking food chain .

Ergonomics

This is a small phone so if you have big hands, you have to get used to it. The virtual keyboard is also really small; I found it hard to type even with the SWYPE feature. But the small size perfectly fits on my pocket.

Price
I’ve been looking for a cheap android phone for a long time here in the Philippines then this came and the first thing that catches my attention was the price. It’s an entry level phone, reasonably priced at P5990 but there’s a forecast that the prices will go up since this is only an introductory price. The current market price is not bad at all for an android smart phone with a descent specs. As the nickname says, it’s intended for the young people who want a galaxy series phone that can fit their budget. I can’t find any demo unit at the time of writing.

The screen protector is hard to find at this time, what I did is cut off the sides of the screen protector intended for the iPhone just to fit. But I did regret it later when the sides started to peel off.  I’ve been waiting for the call of the store for the free art wraps, still no SMS receive yet.

Having all those features and of course the price, its worth to have this as your first Android phone.
